Here’s my response to a mom whose 6th grader son keeps getting picked last during recess. Can you believe schools still allow kids to pick their own teams like that, one kid at a time? I know some will say, Hey, it’s recess, we can’t control what the kids do. But I say, Yes you can. Schools can do a lot to create cultures of inclusion throughout their entire institutions – it requires a lot of attention and a real commitment, but it’s do-able. We can’t honestly tell kids that schools are safe until we get a handle on the stuff that goes on in the locker room, the back of the bus, the playground, the cafeteria line.
